History Of River Thames

It is not very clear how thames got its name, however it appears to have had its origins from either celtic British people (tamesas),welsh British People (temasis),English B people (temese), Irish British People (teimen) .The inclusion of the s in the end   by local may denote was a combination with source of the river (isis). It may however have been derived from river thyamis in Greece. The Greeks may have on the other hand adapted tames version but added a letter h after t to sound like thyamis hence maintained statusquo with the locals yet similar to a name they could relate with.

River Thames has many highlights and attractions that make it popular to tourist and locals.It has various landmarks that with no doubt makes it very desirable to visit, and the most common one is its bridges especially London Bridge for its fame as being the first London Bridge. The other very famous Bridge is Tower Bridge which has a magnificent view especially by night. This bridge is a very huge one and has a peculiar mechanism that allows it to open in the middle to let ships sails through.

London, one of the most popular and largest city in the world is actually on river Thames. The river runs through the city of London and divides it into north and south.

London's origin relates to the existence of river Thames. The story goes that in 50Ad, the Romans sought a favourable place to settle and the lower river (londinium) thames had perfect solution as this part of the river was the lowestt possible point,with wide flowing water and offfered transport solution,hence the origin of name London. It soon became a very popular port and became a world centre for trade. It was built in the region of two hills namely Ludgate and Cornhill. At a later date, London Bridge was erected and constructed.

Other Highlights On River Thames

Though the section of river Thames in London is very small consindering its over all length,it has very important Highlights and attractions to include Big Ben and the Houses of parliament, Docks, museums, theatres, wharfs, piers, a heliport (Battersea), Airport (city airport),palaces, tourism, transport, parks and Islands. It obviously offers a gateway from mainland to the sea and sea to the mainland. There are tunnels that offer underground crossing of the river and the two popular ones are Blackwall and Rotherhithe tunnel. River Thames is said to have inspired musicians, film makers, artists and writers like those who wrote books like wind in the willows, shakespear,shylock holmes and many others.

Popular Activities And Places Of attractions.

Sports on river thames is very popular and includes boating,sails,rowing, canoeing, kayaking, cruising, fishing and of course walks. The last two are the most popular in tidal Thames( section of Thames in London). Others are more popular upstream of thames, mainly from Teddington locks, however boating starts from putney.Some popular cruises can be taken from victoria embarkment piers and by houses of parliament which can go to local places like Greenwich. Greenwich is a popular place especially for its fame on the Meridian Time (GMT)
